‘Shroomin’ — on a funday afternoon

Hey! Don’t miss reading my Seattle Times colleague Lynda Mapes’ great story today on foraging for mushrooms “somewhere east of Snoqualmie Pass.” And do watch Mark Harrison’s accompanying video on stalking the magnificent matsutake:

I’m weighing the idea of going to visit a friend on the Olympic Peninsula tomorrow, who’s promised to take me chanterelle hunting at her secret site. She’s assured me it’s ripe for the pickings and promised a nice bowl of soup, after, but I’m afraid I’ve got too many chores to run and a messy house to clean, so I’m probably going to bogue. Still. The idea of bringing home a heap of fresh-picked chanterelles for the price of a ferry ticket is pretty irresistable, and it’s been too long since my family and I hit the trail in seach of gold — and came up with this jackpot:

Of course, if Linda was promising matsutakes, like this beaut — foraged “somewhere east of Snoqualmie Pass” — I might be throwing my basket and paring knife in the car right now:
