Roosevelt High drama teacher now a Hall of Famer

Roosevelt High’s much-celebrated director of theater, Ruben Van Kempen, will be inducted into the Educational Theatre Association (EdTA) Hall of Fame in September in Coronado, Calif.

Van Kempen, one of five inductees this year, has an impressive bio. Here it is, straight from EdTA’s press release:

“Van Kempen, an educator for more than four decades, serves as co-chapter director for Washington Thespians, the state affiliate of EdTA’s student honor organization, the International Thespian Society (ITS). He has made two trips to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival with Roosevelt students and partners with a number of professional theatre companies in Seattle, including the Seattle Repertory Theatre, Jet City Improv, Book It All Over, and the Intiman Theatre. His work with Seattle’s theatre community has been recognized by Theatre Puget Sound with the Gregory A. Falls Sustained Achievement Award for dedication to theatre in Washington and also by the Intiman Theatre, which awarded him with the inaugural Ruben Van Kempen Arts Educator Award in 2006, honoring Washington educators who inspire and empower young people through theatre.”
