A lecture on magic, complete with magic

The Stroum Jewish Community Center kicks off another season of lively, interesting programs this weekend, with “Jews, Magic and Houdini.” Magician/author Joshua Jay will discuss the intersection of magic and Judaism and the Jewish magicians “throughout history who have tempted danger.” Like most speakers, he’ll use audio-visual aids but unlike most, Jay will also use a little sleight of hand. 4 p.m. Sept. 9, Stroum center on Mercer Island.

Note: The death-defying Harry Houdini’s father was a rabbi named Mayer Samuel Weisz, who served the Zion Reform Jewish Congregation in Appleton, Wis., shortly after the family arrived in America in the 19th century. Houdini used to tell the public he was born in Appleton rather than his true birthplace, Budapest.
