Three area high-school students will travel to New York in May for the national finals of the August Wilson Monologue Contest after winning the local round earlier this week at Seattle Rep. Each entrant had to perform a 3-minute monologue from one of the plays by Wilson, the Pulitzer-winning playwright who died in Seattle in 2005.

Selected from 10 entrants were:

–First place and $500: Zenobia Taylor, Garfield High, Seattle; she performed “Martha Pentecost” from “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone.”

–Second place and $250: Reneeka Massey-Jones, Timberline High, Lacey; she performed “Vera” from “Seven Guitars.”

–Third place and $100: Alexandra Hope, South Kitsap High, Port Orchard; she performed “Rose Maxson” from “Fences.”
