E3: Microsoft’s Xbox pals — Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney and Tony Hawk

LOS ANGELES — Microsoft’s press conference this morning began with the first public demonstration of The Beatles Rock Band game from MTV and Harmonix going on sale Sept. 9

The game is appearing on multiple platforms, but the companies announced that the song “All You Need is Love” will only be available as a download on the Xbox 360. All proceeds from that song will be donated to Doctors Without Borders, they said.

But the headliners were Yoko Ono, Olivia Harrison and then Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney.

“The game is good, the graphics are very good and we were great,” Ringo said.

“Who ever thought we’d end up as Androids,” McCartney said.

It was a tough opening act for skateboarder Tony Hawk to follow. He came out next with a new Xbox controller for his “Ride” skating game. The controller is basically a skateboard without wheels and electronics inside that users stand on and pivot and move around the floor, using its upturned ends for leverage.
