Nokia Windows phones: Lumia, not Sea Ray

The new Nokia Windows phones look great but the Finnish phone giant made an error, in my opinion.

Instead of running with the cool code name for the flagship model – Sea Ray – the phone being unveiled Wednesday will be called the Lumia 800, according to an early peek at WinRumors.com.

I speculated earlier that Sea Ray sounded like a speedboat. Lumia 800 sounds like a new lightbulb, or a compact Chevrolet.

Nokia’s also introducing a lower-end Windows phone called the Lumia 710 that has a more curved case, according to the report, which reiterates the earlier word that the phones will debut in Europe in November and arrive in the U.S. in 2012. Maybe they’ll call it the Sea Ray here, sort of like Microsoft’s letting the Mango code name linger for Windows Phone 7.5.

Lumia’s actually a term for a kind of art created from light, first explored by Danish artist Thomas Wilfred in the early 1900s, according to this site.

Here’s a stack of Nokia N9s, the same chassis used for the Lumia 800:
