Digital bookmobile coming soon, really

You wouldn’t think there’d be such a thing as a digital bookmobile. But a big one’s on the way to Washington state.

OverDrive, the big distributor of electronic books to libraries, is bringing its “Digital Bookmobile National Tour” to Olympia, Lynden and Spokane in early May.

Next thing you know, Google will show up with an email truck.

OverDrive’s big rig is more of a gadgetmobile than a traditional bookmobile. The Cleveland-based company outfitted a 74-foot-long semi-truck and trailer with computers and mobile devices to demonstrate how to download electronic library books.

Visitors can see how books are checked out on devices such as the iPhone, Kindle, Nook, Sony Reader, BlackBerry and Android tablets.

Here are the tour stops in Washington. It’s bypassing central Puget Sound altogether, perhaps because it couldn’t handle Seattle’s traffic and parking rates:

Thursday, May 3, noon to 6 p.m.

Lynden Public Library

216 4th St.

Lynden

Friday, May 4, 1-5 p.m.

Olympia Library

Monday, May 7, noon to 6 p.m.

North Spokane Library

44 East Hawthorne

Spokane

Tuesday, May 8, noon to 6 p.m.
