Microsoft scored an exclusive for its Xbox 360 video lineup, perhaps with a little help from a former employee.
Redbox Instant — the new Netflix challenger from Redbox and Verizon — is coming to the Xbox in the “very near future,” according to an announcement by Xbox frontman Major Nelson.
Beta testing of Redbox Instant is under way on other devices and will begin on the Xbox in a few days.
The service provides a combination of streaming video and discs available from Redbox kiosks. For $8 a month the service will provide streaming plus four one-night disc rental credits. A package with Blu-ray discs will be $9 per month.
Perhaps the local connections helped Xbox get the console exclusive.
Redbox is a subsidiary of Coinstar, which is based in Bellevue.
It also couldn’t hurt that Coinstar’s chief executive, Scott Di Valerio, is a former Microsoft vice president.
