Avvo launches lawyer marketplace

No, they’re not available for dunk tanks or pet-waste removal.

But you can now find lawyers to handle your divorce or traffic tickets through Avvo, the Seattle online legal forum and directory.

Avvo today announced that it has begun connecting lawyers and clients via its new Avvo Marketplace. People can use the service to enter details and receive personalized proposals from lawyers, including fees or estimated costs and how they’ll approach the case.

The service is free for clients. Avvo isn’t yet saying whether it plans to seek referral fees or otherwise monetize the service. At a minimum the marketplace may draw more potential clients to browse the site and use its forum, and more lawyers to register with Avvo.

“Many consumers come to Avvo.com seeking legal advice and realize that they need the expertise of an attorney to handle their situation, but the process of finding, hiring and making sure you’re getting good value from an attorney is daunting,” Avvo founder Mark Britton said in the release. He said the marketplace will provide them more information and remove the “friction” that may keep people from hiring attorneys.

The marketplace is starting with divorce and traffic ticket cases. Additional marketplaces will be added later.
