Report: New Xbox $499, or $299 with subscription

More details are emerging about Microsoft’s next Xbox, which will be unveiled May 21 at a press event in Redmond.

The new console will cost $499 or $299 with a $10 per month subscription, according to a report today from Paul Thurrott at WindowsITPro.com.

Microsoft last year introduced a subscription plan that lowered the cost of the current Xbox 360 to $99, if buyers subscribed to the Xbox Live service for two years at $15 per month. The plan was a success and helped Microsoft hold the lead on U.S. console sales.

Thurrott also reported that the new Xbox is based on a version of Windows 8. I wonder if that means Metro-style apps built for Windows 8 will also run on the console, or at least be easier get running on the Xbox.
