Step aside, Slim: Bill Gates once again world’s richest

Watch for fireworks along the shore in Medina tonight, or at least the fizz from a celebratory soda.

Bill Gates today reclaimed his crown as the world’s richest man after six years in second place behind Mexican phone tycoon Carlos Slim.

Microsoft stock today closed over $34, pushing the estimated wealth of Gates to $72.7 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaire Index.

That pulled Gates ahead of Slim, who is now worth only $72.1 billion, according to Bloomberg’s tally. Gates hasn’t held the top spot since 2007, it reported.

The news comes on the final day of the Microsoft CEO Summit, which annually draws many of the world’s richest executives to the area. It should give them something besides technology to discuss over their asparagus, salmon and Champagne.
