“Halo” goes mobile, on Windows Phone and Windows 8

Microsoft finally is releasing a mobile version of its blockbuster “Halo” franchise, as an exclusive on Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8 phones and tablets.

“Halo: Spartan Assault” goes on sale in July for $6.99, putting it in the top tier of paid games available on Windows devices.

Microsoft and “Halo” creator Bungie released apps in the past that let players keep track of their characters in the game, but they weren’t actual mobile games. The new game was produced by Microsoft’s 343 Industries¬†and Amsterdam-based Vanguard Games.

Players in “Spartan Assault” can choose to be a male or female character — Commander Sarah Palmer or Spartan Davis — battling alien Covenant in a story set between the “Halo 3” and “Halo 4” Xbox games. Achievements during the game apply to players’ “Halo 4” Spartan avatar.

Here’s a preview released today by the company, which apparently is trying to get “Spartan Assault” ahead of the flood of video game news coming next week at the E3 conference in Los Angeles:
