Report: Apple unveiling new iPads on Oct. 22

Apple won’t be left behind when  Amazon.com and Microsoft roll out new tablets for the holiday season.

The company has reportedly scheduled an Oct. 22 event to unveil the fifth-generation of its iPad tablets, including thinner, lighter models with 64-bit processors like the new iPhone 5S and an updated mini with “Retina” display.

AllThingsD reported the event today and noted that Apple also is likely to present the new Mac Pro and OS X Mavericks.

The news comes the same day Steve Ballmer revealed that Microsoft is working toward a touch-friendly version of Office that will come to the iPad eventually.

Don’t hold your breath for a Ballmer demo to be Apple boss Tim Cook’s “one more thing.”
