Hulu doesn’t yet have a set-top box but the online video service today announced a new remote control.
The company announced that its app for iOS and Android phones and tablets can now be used to control Hulu Plus running on the Xbox One and PlayStation 3 and 4 game consoles.
Users can search and select shows on the mobile device and “cast” them onto the large screen, via the consoles. Or they can toggle a show back to the device and continue watching there.
Control of other set-top devices and smart TVs is “coming soon,” according to the company’s announcement.
Some 55 percent of U.S. smartphone owners use TV apps at least once a month, mostly to watch videos, according to a new report by research firm Parks Associates.
Hulu is based in Santa Monica, Calif., but the remote control was largely built in Seattle where the company’s “living room team” is based.
Lead developer Mitch Walker – who wrote the announcement on Hulu’s blog – formerly worked at Microsoft.
