Report: Big Microsoft layoffs on Thursday

A new report says the big Microsoft layoffs will be announced Thursday, followed by an employee meeting with Chief Executive Satya Nadella on Friday.

Microsoft was expected to announce layoffs on or before its next earnings report, on Tuesday, July 22.

By announcing the layoffs this week, the company will give employees and investors time to digest news that might otherwise overshadow the rest of the earnings report.

Nadella has already said he’ll provide more details on the company’s strategy during the call.

My column Monday talked about how the layoffs could affect 6,000 or more people, making it the largest layoff in Microsoft’s history.

On Tuesday, Bloomberg reported that the layoffs could be announced this week.

A Finnish report, picked up early today by Reuters, reported that 1,000 former Nokia employees in Finland will be cut.

Then the New York Times reported this afternoon that the layoffs are now scheduled to be announced Thursday and some conference rooms have been reserved, perhaps to meet with affected employees.

Microsoft spokesman Frank Shaw declined to comment.
