The fall gadget launch calendar is falling into place.
First out of the gate will be Samsung, which confirmed that it’s launching the Galaxy Gear watch and Note 3 tablet at a Sept. 4 event in Berlin. Samsung executive Lee Young-hee gave the scoop to the Korea Times. He described the watch as an extension of the “mobile experience” and the Korea Times headline noted that it’s going to “beat (Apple’s) iWatch unveiling.” Sample quote:
“The new device will enhance and enrich the current smart mobile experience in many ways. It will lead a new trend in smart mobile communications. We are confident that the Gear will add meaningful momentum to the mobile industry.”
An Apple partner appears to have confirmed the Sept. 10 release of Apple’s new mobile operating system, iOS 7. That’s also the day the company is expected to unveil its new iPhones and perhaps other products. The Sept. 10 release is about as secret as the NSA domestic spying program, but it was disclosed in an email to a developer from Apple partner Nuance, and posted on the blog of freelance tech writer Owen Williams.
Microsoft isn’t confirming the launch date for its Xbox One console, but gaming site Kotaku heard that the big day is Nov. 8 — one week ahead of Sony’s PlayStation 4 launch. Kotaku was unusually specific about the source of its leak: a vendor handling signage for Wal-Mart passed along an email listing the schedule of video game “midnight madness” events at its stores.
Speaking of the Xbox One, I wonder if Steve Ballmer will get one of the special white models that Microsof i’s giving to employees on the launch team. Maybe he’ll get one in crimson as a farewell gift.
