Daily round-up: Seattle introduces teacher residency program, Banda cites district’s progress

Seattle introduces new teacher residency program: The front page of today’s paper features an extensive story by John Higgins about the Seattle Teacher Residency, which placed its first cohort of 25 residents in Seattle Public Schools this fall. Unlike most other teacher residency programs in the country, Seattle’s has the full support of the local teachers union

Superintendent cites progress is “State of the District” address: Seattle schools chief José Banda touted improvements in graduation rates and other benchmarks in his annual State of the District address on Tuesday. But, Banda noted, the district met its target in only one of 23 measures in its annual progress report, and significant achievement gaps between white and minority students remain problematic.
