Round-up: Murray unveils $58 million preschool plan, parents rail against Common Core math

Mayor Murray proposes $58 million levy to pay for pre-K: Seattle Mayor Ed Murray unveiled his plan Thursday for expanding free preschool with a $58 million property tax levy. Under the proposal, the entire cost of preschool would be covered for families making up to twice the federal poverty level.

Parents rail against Common Core math problems (AP): Parents across the country are expressing frustration with their kids’ math assignments under the new Common Core standards. The standards require students to not just be able to solve problems but also explain how they got their answers — an extra step that many parents are unaccustomed with.

UW students pressure university to divest in fossil-fuel companies (Jerry Large column): Student groups at the University of Washington are asking administrators to stop engaging with fossil-fuel companies through its endowment funds. Twelve colleges and universities around the country, including Stanford, have pledged not to directly invest in companies that make most of their money from coal extraction.
