Round-up: Indiana program shortens path to degree, NYC turns schools into service hubs

Indiana program provides quicker path to college degree (The Hechinger Report): The Associate Accelerated Program at Ivy Tech Community College in Indianapolis enables students to earn a two-year associate’s degree in 11 months, provided they live at home, stay in college full time and do not work while enrolled. The effort is part of a national focus on improving degree completion rates at community colleges.

NYC plans to turn 40 schools into service hubs (Chalkbeat New York): New York City will spend $52 million to expand dozens of schools into community hubs containing medical and dental care, nutrition a nd fitness programs, and social services for students and families. Advocates say service hubs at schools can help students focus more on learning and improve family engagement.

Philadelphia schools struggling to avoid layoffs (NPR): The district is asking the city, state and labor groups to help it fill a $96 million budget gap.
