Round-up: State colleges warn about impact of budget cuts, homeless student beats the odds

Local colleges warn budget cuts would have big impact: A hypothetical 15-percent budget cut to higher education in Washington state would have a devastating impact, Washington’s public college and university presidents have told the state Office of Financial Management after that office asked the schools to come up with a prioritized list of programs they would cut to reduce costs. Instead, the colleges and universities warned they would need to enact double-digit tuition increases and a significant reduction in enrollment in order to meet that threshold of cuts.

Homeless student from Ethiopia beats the odds (editorial column): Solomon Muche is about to start college at UW, just two years after arriving in Tukwila as a new immigrant from Ethiopia. While his family dealt with homelessness, the 17-year-old managed to teach himself pre-calculus and link up with a mentor who helped him navigate the college-application process.

Seattle startup helps recent grads find jobs: Koru offers a four-week training program that offers college students insight on polishing their resumes and strategies for networking in their chosen fields.
