Round-up: Some see math as key to student success, Marysville hires school crisis expert

Math could be key to students’ future success (NPR): Amid all the attention toward the importance of preschool, some researchers are also pointing to elementary math skills as a key indicator of whether or not students will be successful later on. “There are reliable levels of thinking through which kids pass on their way to achieving a certain understanding in mathematics,” says Doug Clements, creator of a new elementary math curriculum that encourages interactive and discussion-based math lessons.

Marysville district hires crisis expert to direct recovery (The Herald): School crisis expert Mary Schoenfeldt has left a position with Everett’s Department of Emergency Management to lead recovery efforts following the Oct. 24 shooting at Marysville Pilchuck High School. Schoenfeldt, who lives in Marysville, has worked in school crisis response since the 1990s.

LA schools will require ethnic studies course for graduation (Los Angeles Times): Starting in the 2018-19 school year, all Los Angeles students will be required to take an ethnic studies class in order to graduate.
