Roundup: High schools add gender-neutral restrooms; home-schooling movement grows

More schools add gender-neutral restrooms (The Star Tribune): Many colleges and universities already have bathroom facilities available to both male and female students, but high schools are just now beginning to make changes to accommodate transgender students. At Blake’s Upper School in Hopkins, Minn., “All Genders Welcome” restrooms will open on the school’s main floor later this month.

Home-school movement grows amid loose regulations (The New York Times): The number of home-schooled children in the U.S. increased from 1.5 million in 2007 to nearly 1.8 million in 2011-2012, the most recent year the data are available. Half of all states do not require home-schooled students to take any sort of outside assessment, and some states are removing established regulations.

The struggles of first-generation college students (The Atlantic): Only 11 percent of low-income students who are the first in their families to attend college will graduate within six years.
