Harvest Moon Viewing at Seattle Japanese Garden Saturday

Now here’s a romantic evening possibility: the glim of the full moon, appreciated from the Japanese Garden at the Arboretum, with luminaria adding to the glow. The event is from 7 to 10 p.m. in the garden, with the gates opening at 6 pm. Tickets are on sale at the door for $15 to $25.

Cliff DesPeaux took this photo for the Seattle Times at the Keystone ferry terminal in September 2010. A harvest moon is expected this coming weekend.

In Japan, o-tsukimi, or moon viewing festivals, welcome the arrival of the full harvest moon. At the garden, the celebration will include lanterns, luminaries and floating boats to add to the romance of the moon.

There will also be multi-lingual choral music by the Sound Singers Japanese Choir, classical and contemporary Japanese music, dance and poetry. The Seattle Astronomical Society also will be on hand with telescopes to enjoy the night sky, clouds willing.

There’s even a moon viewing tea at 6 and 7 pm. in the Shoseian Teahouse. For more information click here.

Pre-event tickets are sold out, but Thomas Hargrave, assistant director of the garden, says tickets still will be available at the door.
