We’re talking volleyball

Volleyball’s the topic du jour, with our preview and preseason state rankings out today. If you haven’t read it yet, our preview today focuses on Bishop Blanchet, where new coach Matt Chang is replacing a local legend in Joanne Gilligan and trying to take Blanchet to back-to-back titles.

Our preseason rankings by Sandy Ringer keep Blanchet, which you’ll see below has a tough opener today, at No. 1, with Shorecrest not far behind in Class 3A. In Class 4A, Kentwood and Rogers of Puyallup are sandwiched between three teams from Spokane, including the powerhouse at Mead, where the Panthers have a very realistic shot at winning their fifth consecutive 4A title.

Coaches

Tonight’s top games

1. Bishop Blanchet at Bellarmine Prep, volleyball, 4:45 p.m. Defending 3A champ Blanchet, with its new coach, open the season against 4A state qualifiers from Tacoma in 2006.

2. Stanwood at Lake Stevens, girls soccer, 7:30 p.m. These two teams tied for the WesCo North title last season before Stanwood went on to runner-up finish in 4A.

3. Skyline at Sammamish, girls soccer, 7:30 p.m. KingCo 3A games are going to be extra important this season, with the conference potentially only sending one team to the state tournament.
