The Lynnwood Royals aren’t exactly the powerhouse of WesCo South. They haven’t had a winning season since 1999 and had a recent 20-game losing streak.
But things have drastically changed. The Royals are 2-1 for the first time since 1996, when Lynnwood opened 3-0. Much of the credit for the impressive start goes to first-year coach Dorian Manza, who was 17 when Lynnwood last started a season this well. Tom touched on this already, but Manza has done a heck of a job and has these kids believing.
“Our kids are excited,” Manza said. “Going into games, we think we have a chance to win the game rather than think, ‘how bad are we going to lose?’ ”
The Royals face No. 4 Edmonds-Woodway Friday, a team so good that one WesCo coach said he refers to them as the University of Edmonds-Woodway. But for the first time in, well, about 10 years, the Royals believe they can compete.
“I don’t want to be complacent whatsoever,” said Manza. “We should be excited to win, but also should expect to win and be competitive.”
