The last time I saw Snohomish senior running back Derek Jones, he hit a home run in the Northwest 4A District Tournament at Everett Memorial Stadium that I’m pretty sure hasn’t landed yet.
And while nothing has stopped the home-run ball, no WesCo defense has yet to stop Jones the running back. The Washington State-bound senior (he’ll be playing baseball for the Cougars) has four TDs in three games and went for 259 yards in a 29-25 win over Arlington last Friday.
“He’s just a good athlete,” said Oak Harbor coach Dave Ward. “He’s a key guy.”
I’ll be at Snohomish’s Veterans Memorial Stadium on Friday night for what should be a fun game between two 3-0 teams, Snohomish and the Oak Harbor.
“It’s always a tough place to play,” said Ward. I think they’re going to be real fired up. Their fans are real hungry. We’re focused on trying to block out the crowd noise.”
It should be a fun one. Look for The Times’ pick in tomorrow’s paper, and the game story in Saturday’s.
