Area’s first state champions

The 2007-08 school year has its first state champions.

In the state cross-country meet in Pasco, Mount Rainier’s Ryan Prentice ran the 3.1-mile course in 16 minutes, one second, four seconds faster than anyone else in Class 3A. We had this story on Ryan a few days ago on his comeback from a pit bull attack in the summer that eventually forced him to stop running this fall.

Junior Olivia Thomas of King’s won the Class 1A race with a time of 19:16. We had this story on Olivia this week. King’s also won the team competition in Class 1A.

And congratulations to the Newport girls team, which won Class 3A. What a run by senior Natty Plunkett, who finished fifth — after finishing 77th a year ago.

Other top-5 finishes:

Class 4A boys

-Rob Webster, Puyallup, 2nd

-Jonathan Lafler, Tahoma, 4th

-Anthony Ellis, Redmond, 5th

Class 4A girls

-Devin McMahon, Redmond, 4th
