Peyton Siva’s wild three-pointer seemed destined to find only trouble, but instead the desperation heave found the hands of teammate Sterling Carter. Carter made a leaping putback with 1.5 seconds left to give Franklin a 56-55 victory against Fairfax (Calif.).
Fairfax scored 11 straight to start the third quarter and took a huge chunk out of the Franklin lead. Franklin stayed in it by going to the free-throw line, where the Quakers made 19 of 28 attempts.
Fairfax took a 55-54 lead on a putback with about 12 seconds left, and then Siva took off the other way. But he tripped about midcourt, and when he regained his balance, he was surrounded by Fairfax defenders. He threw up a wild three-pointer hit the backcourt high and went right to Carter, who put in the winner.
Siva scored 23 points, 14 of them on free-throw attempts. L.C. White added 10 for Franklin, which hasn’t lost a game played in the state. Renardo Sidney scored 24 points for Fairfax on 10-of-18 shooting. Sidney also had 22 rebounds.
