New basketball rankings

It’s been an interesting week to be a pollster, that’s for sure. When it gets this close to the state tournaments, good teams start to play each other regularly. For instance, four teams in last week’s top 10 lost, yet three — Shadle Park, Decatur and Kentwood — are still in this week’s rankings. But that’s because Shadle Park lost to top-ranked Ferris — SP’s only three losses are to the Saxons — Decatur lost to third-ranked Bellarmine Prep, and Kentwood lost to fifth-ranked Kentridge. No shame in that.

The boys 3A top 10 stays exactly the same. The three teams that lost last week — Renton, Seattle Prep and Bellevue — all lost to higher-ranked teams. Columbia River, the GSHL champ, moves toward the top 10. Great winner-to-state game on Wednesday (corrected) night: No. 3 Lakes vs. No. 8 Mt. Rainier.

In the girls 4A top 10, state qualifier Kentwood makes its move into the top 10. Otherwise, everything stays the same. It should be an interesting week down south, though, with second-ranked Prairie and fourth-ranked Skyview competing for the GSHL 4A’s only automatic state bid. The loser will have to beat the KingCo No. 3 for a trip to state. Also this week, No. 3 Lake Stevens plays No. 4 Jackson, and sixth-ranked Ballard faces seventh-ranked Inglemoor.

Fort Vancouver makes its top 10 debut this season after claiming the Greater St. Helens 3A league. Also, Bellevue moves up to seventh after winning the KingCo 3A tournament.

One final set of rankings left, next week.
