Day 1 boys thoughts

Federal Way just might make the championship game.

The most interesting part about the Eagles victory against Franklin yesterday, I though, was how much potential they showed to play even better. There were some gimmes left out on the floor, and some late turnovers (but I should point out they were a perfect 9-for-9 at the stripe in the fourth).

The fans that walked in later in the day expressed shock about Federal Way’s win, but most of the coaches from the Seattle-Tacoma area weren’t surprised. The Eagles have great size and athleticism. The most important thing from them — I’m gonna go all coachspeak on you right here — is putting it together for a whole game. When they do that, they’re as good as anyone.

The most impressive teams on Wednesday two teams from Spokane and one from WesCo. Ferris and Shadle Park both controlled their first-round games, with Ferris’ DeAngelo Casto and Shadle Park’s Zack Humphrey each having big days. Then there was Edmonds-Woodway, which shocked just about everyone by not only beating Kentridge, but controlling the game from the outset. That was a blowout, through and through. Just when WesCo teams looked headed to a second consecutive 0-3 first round, the Warriors came to the rescue.

Once it got going in the 9 a.m. game, Decatur looked solid, and the Gators should challenge Shadle Park today. Bellarmine Prep showed why its guards are regarded as two of the country’s best, combining for 52 in a win. And Foss looked very dangerous in a last-second 53-51 win against Prairie. It’s a shame more people weren’t around to see LuQuam Thompson’s winning shot with 1.4 seconds left.

The biggest surprise? Maybe that KingCo teams went 0-2, though Garfield had a tough draw. There were probably at least 10 teams the Bulldogs could have gone toe to toe with Wednesday, but Ferris definitely wasn’t one of them. It doesn’t get any easier; they get Kentridge in a loser-out game today.

And again, it’s not like Franklin had an easy draw either. Federal Way showed why, as Lincoln coach Aubrey Shelton said, “Federal Way is one of the best teams around.”
