State players of the year

With the state tournaments behind us — and you can go to the Full Court Press to relive our blogs from the games at the 4A and 3A tournaments — it’s now time for the Times to pick our state players of the year in boys and girls basketball (as well as our all-state teams). It’s not easy, especially because the criteria for state player of the player isn’t exactly universally recognized.

The state player of the year could be:

The best player on the best team. So for the boys, we’d be looking at Ferris or Rainier Beach. For the girls, Lewis & Clark and Auburn Riverside. Obvious candidates: DeAngelo Casto, Ferris; Shawn Stockton, Ferris; Reggie Moore, Rainier Beach; Mike Ladd, Rainier Beach; Katie Grad; Auburn Riverside; Brittany Kennedy, Lewis & Clark.

OR…

The best player, period. Even under this criteria, there’s a question of who had the better season or who has the most talent. So these names (not listed above) immediately come to mind: Abdul Gaddy, Bellarmine Prep; Avery Bradley, Bellarmine Prep; Peyton Siva, Franklin; Josh Smith, Kentwood; Renado Parker, Kentridge; Steve Bjornstad, Columbia River; Ashley Corral, Prairie; Kristi Kingma, Jackson; Eryn Jones, Meadowdale; Lindsey Moore, Kentwood; Ashlee Smith, Skyview; Brittany Gray, Bainbridge.

Like most seasons, this won’t be an easy pair of decisions. So who are your picks?
