Pole Vaulter Dies in Walla Walla

This is scary.

To be a parent, a friend, a mere acquaintance of such a tragedy is difficult to fathom. Just a terrible accident…

After something like this, should pole vaulting as an event be banned at the high school level? Should there be more precautions taken? What’s to be done in a situation like this?

Morning stars:

1. Newport baseball. The 2006 3A state champs scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh for a walk-off win against 2007 champ Issaquah.

2. James Robbins, Shorecrest, baseball. Coming in relief in the fifth, he struck out eight batters in three innings of work and got the victory. The 6-foot junior also went 2-2 at the plate with a home run.

3. Brittany Allen, Archbishop Murphy, softball. She struck out 14 of 20 batters in a 12-0 win over Coupeville. At the plate she was 2-3 with three RBIs, a triple and three stolen bases.
