The best baseball player in state history

At least four of us on staff had a long debate in the office yesterday, trying to figure out the best pitcher and the best baseball player, period, in the history of the state of Washington. And instead of narrowing it down, we simply continued extending the list of possibilities. Here’s the names I jotted down (for real this time):

Ron Santo, Franklin

John Olerud, Interlake

Jason Schmidt, Kelso

Ron Cey, Mount Tahoma

Floyd Bannister, Kennedy

Larry Christenson, Marysville

Ryne Sandberg, North Central

Grady Sizemore, Cascade

Mel Stottlemyre, Mabton

Todd Stottlemyre, Davis

Randy Myers, Evergreen (Vancouver)

Adam Eaton, Snohomish

Richie Sexson, Prairie

Travis Lee, Capital

Some reader-suggested names:

Earl Averill, Snohomish

Fred Hutchinson, Franklin

Jeff Heath, Garfield

Travis Snider, Jackson

Morning stars

1. Josh Sale, Bishop Blanchet, baseball. Hit a three-run home run in a big seventh inning in which Blanchet broke a 1-1 tie open for a 7-2 victory.

2. Jessica Barry, Newport, softball. Struck out 11 and allowed only two hits in seven innings in a 9-0 win against Mercer Island.

3. Katie Somers, Mount Si, golf. Shot an even par 36 — 11 strokes ahead of anyone else — at Bellevue Municipal.
