The 20th annual Eason Invite in Snohomish will have to wait a year. After snow cancelled the event last Saturday, Snohomish track and field coach and meet director Tuck Gionet said there would be a chance that the meet could be moved to May 3. But with so many scheduling conflicts, they called off the meet for 2008.
“We decided, heck, it’s once every 30 years you’re going to get something like this so we decided not to reschedule it,” Gionet said. “I felt bad for three groups: parents who put so much time and effort into it. Two, I felt bad for our kids and our seniors. And the third thing, all the athletes. We treat the kids to a great day of track and field and for the athletes to miss the opportunity is disappointing.”
Gionet and his sons went to Veterans Memorial Stadium at 4 a.m. last Saturday to see the conditions. After spending time trying to clear about four inches of snow off the track and seeing the poor conditions elsewhere, Gionet collaborated with the Snohomish AD and decided to cancel the event.
But on the bright side, they won’t need to reprint or reorder new t-shirts and trophies for next year.
“We don’t need to get any new t-shirts because it will be the 20th again,” joked Gionet. “It’ll work out. Next year will be bigger and better than ever.”
