Where are you going to be?

It’s your last chance. One final weekend of prep sports for the 2007-08 school year.

So, where are you going to be Friday and Saturday?

Are you a follow-my-team-only kind of fan? In other words, if your favorite baseball team didn’t make the Final Four, you’re not going to be at Safeco Field. Or are you a pure prep fan that will be somewhere just because you enjoy high-school sports?

Me? I’ll be in Tacoma for the 4A and 3A fastpitch tournaments, although it has yet to be determined whether I will cover 4A, as in the past, or switch to 3A (either way, we’ll have someone else there to handle the other tournament). And speaking of those two tournaments, what about those first-round matchups between Kentlake and Shadle Park of Spokane in 4A and Kennedy and Issaquah in 3A? Wow, those easily could have been championship games.

Shadle Park, last year’s 4A champion, features possibly the stat’s best pitcher in Oregon-bound Sam Skillingstad. Kentlake, which took fourth last year, counters with possibly the state’s best hitter in UW-bound Felecia Harris. Harris hasn’t been as dominating on the mound since her labrum surgery last fall, but could still lead the Falcons to the title, especially if they play solid defense behind her.

Kennedy is the defending 3A champion and Issaquah is unbeaten. Kennedy fans have to hope ace pitcher/hitter Karli Merlich is able to throw, or the Lancers could be in trouble like they were last Saturday, when they lost both of their games without her at the West Central 3A District tourney. Merlich hurt her pitching arm while batting last week and while she pitched two games at district to assure JFK of a state berth, she said it was too sore to play the following day.

There should be some great softball this weekend (and great weather). The baseball and soccer semifinals look intriguing, too. Are any of you heading to Pasco for track? I’m anxious to see who wins there, especially in the 4A sprints and distance events (OK, 3A, too).

So, where will you be this final weekend of prep sports?
