Eastlake, Kennedy nab softball titles

It’s true — Eastlake pulled off perhaps the upset of the weekend, in any sport, by knocking off Shadle Park of Spokane in the 4A fatpitch championship game, 4-1. The Highlanders, last year’s champions, were ranked as high as No. 6 in the country and had a 35-game win streak stretching back to last season.

Kennedy defended its 3A title by knocking off another previously unbeaten team, Timberline of Lacey, 5-1. Karli Merlich went 3-for-4 with a two-run double and struck out 12 to improve to 20-1 on the season.

Other trophies will go to Redmond and Wilson in 4A and Everett and Bonney Lake in 3A. Those teams are playing in the third- and fourth-place games right now.
