Colo. prospect reportedly heading to Rainier Beach

Meet Corey Stern. He’s a 6-foot-6 small forward from Colorado. According to Rivals.com, he’s a three-star prospect who has at least four Division I offers, including Colorado and Colorado State. He’s joined the Northwest Panthers AAU team (the same as Bellarmine Prep stars Abdul Gaddy and Avery Bradley). He’s also apparently intending to play basketball next year at Rainier Beach.

Stern told Cougzone.com: “So far I like it. They compete way more here, they play hard, and the level of competition is way better out here.”

I spoke today with Beach’s always relaxed coach Mike Bethea, who said, “On the first day of school, when I see him, I’ll believe it … If he ends up at Beach, cool. If he doesn’t, cool.”

He’s apparently interested in both Washington and Washington State, but his interest in Rainier Beach interests me the most. Because a 6-foot-6 Division I prospect makes this Beach team an instant contender in 3A again. The team figures to have several quality guards, but when I saw them at the Franklin summer tournament, my first question was “Where’s their trees?” All their largest players had graduated. So maybe one player won’t quite make a forest, but he would make a difference.
