Volleyball state rankings — Week 4

You know that adage, “You’ve gotta beat No. 1 to be No. 1,” right? Well, this is a case of getting to be No. 2 because they beat No. 2. That would be Sumner, which knocked off Auburn Mountainview last week in four games and now sits in the second spot in Class 3A, formerly held by Mountainview. The Spartans were No. 6 last week. Sadly, Mountainview lost junior MH Lexi Morton to an ACL injury in that match.

East Valley of Spokane retains the No. 1 position despite a 3-0 loss to Lewis and Clark, another Spokane school. Remember, L-C is ranked No. 3 in Class 4A and took top-rated Mead of Spokane to five games earlier this month. There is some other shuffling, what with Eastside Catholic beating Bishop Blanchet.

Shorecrest lost to another solid (but unranked ) 4A team in Marsyville-Pilchuck and moves down to No. 7 in this week’s 3A poll. Last year, the Scots were winning these kinds of matches. By the end of the season, they just might be again. Kennedy lost to Edmonds-Woodway for the second time this fall, but remains at No. 4. Mount Si holds onto that No. 10 spot, with Mercer Island pounding on the door.

The only change in Class 4A is at No. 10, where Rogers of Puyallup steps in. That could just as easily be Bethel, and those two teams play next week. Until they do, Ashleigh Pollard gives the Rams the upper hand.
