The latest news and analysis on high-school sports around the Seattle area

XC preview and links

Our Craig Smith took an interesting look at cross-country today in a story that ran with our list of the area’s top runners. He had this question: why do so many athletes — as many as 100 at a school — come out for a sport in which so few of them are going to run varsity, and only five of their scores are going to count?

The story is a good look at the driving force of day-to-day improvement and camaraderie. Take a look, and then answer the question yourself, if you run: what keeps bringing you back to the course?

A few links to pass along today:

-A couple regional looks back on the weekend: the Tri-City Herald’s Rene Ferran on the Big Nine, and the Spokane Spokesman-Review’s Mike Vlahovich on the Greater Spokane League.

-This Web site has put together a video on Skyline WR Gino Simone, a Cougar recruit.

-If you’re interested in the Greater St. Helens Leagues, you might want to check this out.

Morning stars

1. Charlie Kern, Mercer Island, boys golf. Shot a three-under 31 at Twin Rivers in a Mercer Island win against Bothell.

2. Marika Loudenback, Mount Si, girls soccer. Made an early goal stand up for a 1-0 win as she shut out Interlake.

3. Sarah Schwanke, Mount Rainier, girls soccer. Scored a hat trick in the Rams’ 8-0 win against Evergreen.
