The latest news and analysis on high-school sports around the Seattle area

Links and notes

Did you all see the 91-0 football game that got national attention? I heard some starters were benched for the entire game because the coaches knew it might get ugly.

The losing coach said the winning team did nothing wrong.

This was an issue not long ago when Lakes won 83-0 (edited to correct score), but scores like this are as commonplace all over the country. And who’s to say a 83-0 nothing football game is any worse than a 12-0 soccer game? Should volleyball teams let opponents score in a blowout? What about a 160-10 swim score? It seems football gets an unfair shake in the sportsmanship debate.

Here are some other links:

  • Skyline football is ranked 15th nationally by USA Today, 18th by ESPN Rise and 21st by Rivals. Bellevue is ranked 67th by Rivals and received some votes in the ESPN poll.

  • Although this poll by MaxPreps says the Spartans aren’t even the best team in the state…

  • Beamer’s girls soccer team is ranked 20th nationally by ESPN Rise, but do I get an assist? Here’s the comment: “Beamer was held to a draw last week, yet remains ranked No. 1 in the state by the Seattle Times.” Lakeside comes in at No. 41.

  • Kentwood’s Josh Smith and Enumclaw’s Carissa Gwerder got some national love as well. And their “Greater Seattle” preseason basketball rankings go 1) Bellarmine Prep, 2) Rainier Beach, 3) Kentwood, 4) Franklin, 5) Garfield.

  • Here’s an eye-opening story on struggling academic programs from Sports Illustrated. “As the economy nosedives and voters become increasingly frustrated with higher taxes and inefficient spending by school officials, more school districts may look to parents and private businesses to fund athletics.”
