Issaquah’s 36-18 win against previously undefeated Marysville-Pilchuck couldn’t have summed up better the fates of the two teams’ conferences this weekend.
Issaquah’s KingCo conference? Between 4A and 3A, seven of the nine KingCo teams advanced. The top four in 4A won by an average of 24.5 points. All three KingCo 3A teams won, by an average of 32.3 points. Mount Si scored the conference’s most significant win, upsetting 10th-ranked Peninsula 33-9 in Gig Harbor.
A totally different story for WesCo. Its only undefeated team, the Tomahawks, were never really in it Saturday night against Issaquah. Although they were the fourth seed from KingCo, the Eagles had the toughest front line M-P saw all season. And as Marysville-Pilchuck was losing tonight in Everett, its conference colleagues were doing the same. Snohomish and Lake Stevens were blown out. The previous night, WesCo South teams Mariner and Edmonds-Woodway lost in the South Sound.
That leaves Jackson as the only 4A team north of Bothell left playing. And the schedule didn’t do the Timberwolves any favors; they travel next weekend to Spokane to play Ferris. It should be noted that WesCo’s only remaining 3A team, Meadowdale, did win big against Nathan Hale.
So what are the impressions from this preliminary round? For the most part, none of the top teams changed anyone’s mind about where they stand. Skyline, Olympia and Auburn still look the strongest in 4A. The 3A title will likely go through Bellevue, Ferndale or Lakes.
But some teams reminded everyone why they got this far in the first place. Could any of these teams — Issaquah, Bothell, Rogers, Woodinville, Ferris, Curtis, Southridge — make a run to the Tacoma Dome in 4A? Absolutely. And in 3A, we’ll see some fantastic matchups next week: Mount Si at Eastside Catholi8c, Liberty aat Kennedy, West Seattle at Ferndale, and a whopper in O’Dea at Lakes.
The scheduled matchups for next week are after the jump. Tomorrow, I’ll rank all 16 remaining teams in 4A and 3A to get prepared for next week.
