Eastside Catholic wins with miracle finish

Before the kickoff tonight, the announcing/scoreboard crew at Memorial Stadium was saying they were tired of working blowout games and yearned for a thriller.

They got it.l

In a game that saw two lead changes in the final minute, Eastside Catholic scored with 18 seconds to play on a 13-yard pass from Zach Cuaresma to Spencer Esau to beat Mount Si. The Wildcats had taken the lead with 58 seconds left on a 3-yard plunge by Sean Snead that capped a 35-yard drive.

The big play for EC that set up the winning TD pass was a 68-yard kickoff return by Marion Bactol, who had an apparent 47-yard TD on a punt return called back earlier in the game.

EC coaches have called the Crusaders a “team of destiny” and Bactol says he is a believer.

Another unusual thing about this game: EC’s go-ahead TD pass in the second quarter for a 7-6 lead after the PAT was caught by senior Christian Johnson, who had caught 1 pass all-year. Coach Bill Marsh had told his team Thursday that one of two new guys would be heroes. He knew what he was talking about.

The Metro League champions (10-1) now face Lakes in the quarterfinals on the road.

This was a heart-ripping loss for Mount Si (6-5), which had won four of its past 5 games in advancing to the round-of-16.
