State volleyball brackets

The state volleyball brackets for Class 4A, 3A and 2A are now posted on the WIAA website. I’ll link to them below.

First up is the 3A tournament at the Toyota Center in Kennewick, Thursday and Friday. So we’ll start there: Class 3A

Red-hot Auburn Mountainview, fresh off its upset of previously unbeaten, top-ranked Sumner, has no breather in the first round, facing No. 2 Shorecrest. Note that these rankings were made before Shorecrest was upset early in Northwest District play, but the Scots did come back to qualify behind surging Meadowdale. Speaking of the Mavericks, they take on Holy Names in the opening round.

And how about this first-round matchup: No. 1 Sumner vs. No. 8 Bishop Blanchet. Or this one: No. 5 Kennedy vs. No. 7 Eastside Catholic. Wow, those are some tough pairings.

One thing I noticed right off the bat — No. 6 East Valley of Spokane (once rated No. 1), failed to qualify. Instead, No. 9 Mount Spokane and unranked Shadle Park (previously in the top-10) represent Eastern Washington.

Third -ranked Mercer Island faces Camas in the opening round.

The 4A and 2A tournaments are Friday and Saturday in Kennewick.

Here is the 4A bracket: Class 4A

What jumps out at you? If you missed it, Mead of Spokane had to scramble to qualify as the No. 3 team out of the East Regional after losing to Kamiakin of Kennewick. But the third-ranked Panthers, five-time defending champions, are indeed back and face Puyallup in the opening round. Edmonds-Woodway opens against top-ranked Lewis and Clark of Spokane.

Roosesvelt gets No. 4 Kamiakin in the first round. No. 6 Monroe takes on Rogers of Puyallup, and those winners square off in the quarterfinals.

No. 2 Kentwood, which was upset by Puyallup in the semifinals of the West Central District tournament, starts with Issaquah. Bothell, the KingCo 4A champion, opens with an Olympia team that had been in the top-10 for most of the season before a district loss to Curtis of University Place a little over a week ago.

In the 2A tourney, Archbishop Murphy meets Grandview in the first round. Find the the full bracket here: Class 2A.

We’ll talk more about the brackets tomorrrow, but feel free to comment in the meantime.
