Eastside Catholic to play for 3A volleyball title

Eastside Catholic beat Lakes of suburban Tacoma, 3-1, to advance to tonight’s championship match of the Class 3A state volleyball tournament.

But it won’t be an all-Metro League final. Bishop Blanchet lost 3-0 to Shadle Park, which looked impressive.

The title match has been pushed back to 7 p.m. Kennedy and Sumner are playing right now for fifth and seventh places. Blanchet and Lakes are scheduled to meet at 8 p.m. to decide third and sixth places.

In the 4A tourney, it was a tough afternoon for local teams. Second-ranked Kentwood gave No. 1 Lewis and Clark a tremendous battle, but fell in three. The Conquerors actually had chances to win both games two and three, but came up short — 27-25, 31-29.

Marysville-Pilchuck fell hard against a surging Skyview team, 3-0. Kentwood and M-P now play an elimination match tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. The winner gets a trophy.

The showdown between No. 4 Kamiakin of Kennewick and No. 6 Monroe is still in progress. Kamiakin bolted to a 2-0 lead, but Kylin Munoz brought the Bearcats back to win game three, smacking 11 kills in that game. Game four just started.

Mead and Olympia, meeting in the other 4A quarterfinal, are in the middle of game one.

More later.
