KW, MP advance in 4A volleyball

It wasn’t easy for either of them, but No. 2 Kentwood and unranked Marysville-Pilchuck are through to the quarterfinals in the 4A state volleyball tournament.

Both matches went the full five games.

Kentwood trailed Issaquah 2-1 before storming back. M-P went back and forth with Curtis of University Place, a team that had been red hot, then was in control most of the way in game five.

Edmonds-Woodway simply was no match for top-ranked Lewis and Clark, losing three straight. That means Kentwood meets L-C in the quarterfinals at 3:30 p.m. Last year, the Conquerors lost to the same orange-and-black squad in the semis.

Marysville-Pilchuck gets No. 8 Skyview in the quarters, also at 3:30. Skyview beat Bellarmine Prep to advance.

All but one of the next first-round matches are under way, although nearly all of the courts are behind. The Monroe-Rogers match scheduled for 10:30 is still a few minutes away.

Bothell got off to a slow start against Olympia and lost the first game, but rallied to take the second. No. 4 Kamiakin of Kennewick, with a loud home crowd, came from behind to beat Roosevelt in game one and leads in game two. Mead, the five-time defending champion, leads Puyallup 9-3 early.

It’s going to be a long, late day, at this rate. But the volleyball is superb.

The first round of the 2A matches follow and I’ll especially keep an eye on top-ranked Archbishop Murphy for you.
