Monroe joined Kentwood and Marysville-Pilchuck in the quarterfinals of the 4A state volleyball tournament with a 3-1 victory over Rogers of Puyallup.
It was my first look this season at All-American Kylin Munoz, and she’s every bit the player I remember from last season.
Rogers won the second game to make things interesting, but Monroe was pretty much in control the rest of the way. The sixth-ranked Bearcats now play No. 4 Kamiakin of Kennewick at 5 p.m. That should be a sizzling match. Kamiakin made short work of Roosevelt, 3-0.
Bothell, the KingCo 4A champion, fell into the consolation bracket with a 3-1 loss to Olympia. Mead, the five-time defending state champ, won its 22nd consecutive state match with a 3-0 victory over Puyallup. The Panthers play Olympia in the quarterfinals at 5 p.m.
Mind you, those are wishful times. A couple of the courts are way behind, which likely will affect the 3A semifinals scheduled for 3:30 (and possibly the 6:30 p.m. championship match). For instance, the 2A match between Selah and Sequim, scheduled for noon, is still about 10 minutes away from starting.
