Volleyball: Shadle wins 3A title; Mead loses in 4A

Eastside Catholic fell short in its bid to win the school’s first state volleyball championship, losing 3-0 in the final to Shadle Park of Spokane. The Highlanders played amazing defense.

Sumner earned the fifth-place trophy with a 3-1 win over Kennedy, which wound up eighth.

Two other trophy matches remain: Mercer Island vs. Mount Spokane (4th-7th) and Bishop Blanchet vs. Lakes (3rd-6th). Back with those results later.

The buzz in the 4A tournament is the end of Mead’s reign as Olympia pulled a 3-2 upset in the quarterfinals. The Panthers were five-time defending champions and had won 22 consescutive state mtaches.

No local teams remain in the winner’s bracket as Monroe lost to Kamiakin of Kennewick, 3-1. Tomorrow’s 4A semifinals pair Olympia against Kamiakin and Skyview against Lewis and Clark, both at 2 p.m.
