Cashmere came from behind in the fourth quarter to pull out a 10-9 victory over Cascade Christian of Puyallup in the Class 1A championship football game at the Tacoma Dome.
Cascade Christian led 7-3 and was driving for more when Trevor Davis intercepted a Ben Johnson pass at the 20-yard line and returned it 21 yards to the Cashmere 49. QB Derek Todd engineered the game-winning drive and scored on a zig-zag, eight-yard keeper with 4:03 left in the game.
The Cougars threatened again, but Davis tipped another Johnson pass and Chris Ruether picked it off at the 10 with 2:03 to play. Cascade Chrisitian held and the Bulldogs elected to have their punter (Ruether) take a safety with 55 seconds on the clock.
Cascade Christian, which finishes a fine season at 12-2, started its final drive at the 31 and picked up one first down, but Edgar Esquivel’s pick with less than 10 seconds to play ended the comeback hopes.
Cashmere (13-0) wins its first championship since 1984 and gives coach Phil Zukowski his 200th coaching victory.
Next up is the 2A final between Prosser and Lynden, which should be entertaining. Josh will be updating you on that one.
