Federal Way, Auburn take early upper hand

Last season, there wasn’t a more interesting league in boys basketball than the SPSL North, where four teams — Federal Way, Decatur, Kentridge and Kentwood — each were in first place at some point. Kentridge, Decatur and Kentwood tied for the league lead, with Federal Way a game off — but, you’ll remember, Federal Way ended up with the best finish at state.

Decatur’s gone now, having moved to the SPSL South, but bring in Auburn and it’s clear we have another four-way fight for this league title. No. 1 Federal Way has to be the favorite, with so much talented depth at each position. But Kentwood, with 6-foot-9 post Josh Smith, showed last night what having the league’s best player means, as the Conquerors came within two points of the Eagles in the final two minutes of a 61-53 Federal Way win.

“Everyone in that ,locker room knows we can win next time,” Smith said afterward.

And down in Auburn, the Trojans relied on the big-game experience of Carlo Lavoie, who just finished a terrific football season. Lavoie scored nine of his team-high 24 points in the fourth quarter, and Auburn beat Kentridge 69-65. Shaquielle McKissic scored 25 of his 31 points in the second half for Kentridge.
