Skyline fifth in USA Today top 25

After winning the Class 4A football championship last weekend, Skyline moved up one spot to No. 5 in the USA Today Super 25. Every team’s season is not over, but the Spartans have a great shot at finishing in the top five, and with every team ahead of them still playing, could theoretically end up No. 1.

No Washington team has finished in the top 10 since 2004, when Bellevue finished eighth. Skyline, which finished 21st last year, began this season at No. 17 and continued to move up during the season. The high-profile nature of Skyline’s top players — particularly junior QB Jake Heaps — surely helped USA Today stay aware of the Spartans.

For that reason, don’t be surprised if Skyline begins next year pretty high, too. And Bellevue, which returns several players from a 14-0 season, should get some notice too.
